Bowl-A-Vard Sand Volleyball Rules

Summer League

  1. Team Composition
Players must be 18 or older. There are 6 players to a team. Teams consist of 3 men and 3 women. A legal line-up will be allowed with 5 players as long as there is a 3/2 or 2/3 male-female ratio. A team with 4 players can play, but must have at least 1 person of the opposite sex playing. If a team has less than 4 players it is a forfeit.
  2. Games
A coin will be flipped and the winner of the flip will get choice of serve or select a side to receive the serve. Teams will change serve and side after each game. All Games will be played by rally scoring. Every point will count towards the score. All 3 games will be played to 21 points with the team having a minimum of a 2 point lead. In case of a score not settled at 21, a team must still win by 2 or the first team to 27 regardless if there is a two point difference. If a team wins all three games in a night, they will receive a free pitcher slip. This slip will count towards the Pitcher Talley Race.
  3. Legal Volley
There will be no sex rules. Any combination of players is a legal volley.
  4. Legal Serve
The ball must be served underhand (REC) or either way - overhand or underhand (INT) within 10 seconds of the referee's whistle. If the ball is served before the referee's whistle, it will be considered a do over. If it hits the net on the serve and makes it over, it is a live ball and must be played.
  5. Receiving The Serve
A team must bump or set the first hit when receiving the serve. Blocking is allowed, but no attacking of the ball.
  6. Rotation & Tardy Players
Rotation of players is allowed but they must rotate at the referee's stand. We will not allow players to stand anywhere else on the court due to safety concerns. If a team has less than 6 people and the match has started, then the late player can immediately step in at the next point as long as the ratios are kept in place to have a legal team . If they have 6 players, then the late person can rotate in at the referee's stand on next team service.
  7. Timeouts
Each team will be allowed one timeout for one minute during each game. There will be a maximum of a 2 minute break between games. Please observe this rule so we may keep the other matches starting on time.
  8. Misc Play Rules
There is no center line. A foot fault will only occur if you interfere with the opposing team's play of the ball or completely pass under the net. Players may not make contact with the net or any part of it, including the poles and cables while a point is in play. If contact occurs, the opposing team wins the point. No underhand palm hits will be allowed. This will be called for an illegal hit or a carry. Players may block or set above the net. A double hit when trying to block a hard driven spike is a legal hit as long as it is in the same receiving motion. Players in the back row may not spike or block at the net. There is no 10 foot line in our sand volleyball leagues.
  9. Game Forfeit
A forfeit of the first game will occur if a team does not have the required number of players or the right ratio of players present 5 minutes after scheduled game time or 5 minutes after referee blows whistle to start game if earlier match ran late. Remaining games will be forfeited if a legal line-up is not present 15 minutes after scheduled time or 15 minutes after referee blows whistle to start game if earlier match ran late.
  10. League Standings
Standings will be determined by the total games won. This will be a straight 17 week season. No Playoff Match. If there is a tie at the end of the season, the team with the most head to head wins against each other will be named the League Champions. The league will rotate courts, 6 weeks on the first court, 5 on the second court, and 6 on the third court. Some leagues with larger numbers may play on multiple courts per night. Please check your schedules for specifics.

At the completion of a match, the team captain must see the referee to verify and signoff on the scores. At this point the scores are final. So make sure you look them over carefully. This is your responsibility as a team captain.

  11. Team Rosters & Waiver Forms
There will be open rosters. This means that each team may bring anyone in to play for them, with one exception. Players on a team may not sub for another team in the same league. If a team is found in violation they will forfeit all games that night. A player may play in the adjoining league without penalty. Waiver forms must be completed by everybody before they play. NO EXCEPTIONS. Give the form to the referee or the bartender on duty.
  12. Cancellations and Make-ups
Games will be cancelled for inclement weather by 5:00 PM of the scheduled day. Please check our website www.bowlavard.com for cancellations before 5:00PM. After 5:00 PM calls may be placed to Bowl A Vard for confirmation. Please only team captains, our phones get overloaded with too many calls. Bowl A Vard will try to get a hold of each teams' captain. It is the captain's responsibility of informing the other members of the team. If a night is cancelled, it must be made up within the next two weeks. Matches will not be rescheduled to the end of the Season. If league is cancelled in the middle of league play, only completed games will count. The remainder of the games must be made up at the convenience of both teams within two weeks. If a team is unable to play a scheduled night, they must contact the other team's captain and Bowl A Vard at least 2 days in advance unless it is an emergency situation. Make-ups will be allowed and scheduled upon agreement of both teams. Make-ups must be done no later than 2 weeks after scheduled match. Times are available, but limited. Please contact Colleen at Bowl A Vard to reschedule a match. If makeup matches are not completed by the second week, they are considered a forfeit.
